Health and False Nails

Artificial nails have been popular for some time. They give great looking nails in a short space of time. But there can be some cause for concern. Some chemicals used in false nails, specifically the chemical used t bond them to the real nail, can be harmful.

Methyl methacrylate is a binding agent used in some dental procedures. It has also be used to glue false nails to the real nails underneath. But this substance has been banned for several reason. Most of these reasons relate to health, but there is also concern that the bond formed by methyl methacrylate is too strong, which may lead to the real nail being torn off in the unfortunate case of an accident.

Some salons use methyl methacrylate because it is a cheap alternative. But the potential problems are not worth the cost saving.

Methyl methacrylate will cause

  • Irritation to the skin
  • Redness and Swelling
  • Skin Sensitisation (tingling or numbness)
  • Respiratory problems or eye, nose and throat irritation
  • Fungal or bacterial infections
  • Discolouration of the nails (yellowing)
  • Deformities to the real nail.

This means the glue that holds an artificial nail in place many be steadily destroying the real nails underneath.
